Getting started
A simple way to track what you want to watch, rate what you've seen, and share movie watchlists with friends or family. No feeds, no algorithm — just lists.
moviegroupies uses passwordless sign-in. Enter your email, and we send you a one-time link — click it and you're in. No password to create, remember, or leak.
Check your spam folder first. Links expire after a while, so if it's been a bit, just request a new one from the sign-in page. If you have a token instead of a working link, you can paste it directly on the "enter token" page.
Yes, it's currently free for personal use. Every account gets generous limits on list size, number of lists, and group members — enough for typical use without hitting a wall.
Movie lists
Yes. Everyone gets a default list to start, and you can create additional named lists — for example, one for movies with friends and one for a specific genre kick. Your default list is also where all your ratings, wants, and comments are kept.
Lists are private unless explicitly shared with a group (or multiple groups).
Rating (1–5 stars) is for movies you've already seen. "Want" flags something you're planning to watch. You can also leave a comment on any item, seen or not.
Titles, posters, and overview info come from TMDB (The Movie Database), a third-party movie data source. We link out to TMDB, IMDb, and Rotten Tomatoes pages when available.
Pre-built lists you can browse and import straight into your own watchlist: TMDB Upcoming, TMDB Recently Released, TMDB Top 250, IMDb Top 250, NYT 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century, NYT 100 Top Movies According to Readers, AFI 100 Greatest American Films, and our own Moviegroupies Crème de la Crème.
Groups & sharing
A group is a way to share a movie list with other people. Members can see each other's ratings and comments on shared lists — handy for deciding what to watch together.
Lists and groups mix and match freely — share one list with several groups, share several lists with one group, or keep any list private. Whatever combination fits how you actually watch movies with people.
From the group page, enter their email. If they're new to moviegroupies, they'll get an email inviting them to sign up and join; existing users get a link straight to the invitation.
You can also generate a shareable join link (token) instead — anyone with the link can join the group without an email invite.
Yes — join or create as many groups as you like, up to your account's limit. Switch between them from the groups menu.
Each group has a Grouplist — every movie shared with the group in one table, with combined ratings and wants from everyone. There's also an Activity feed showing the latest ratings and wants across your groups as they happen, filterable to one group at a time.
AI assistant (MCP)
Yes — moviegroupies has an MCP server so an AI assistant can search movies, manage your watchlists, and coordinate with your groups on your behalf. See how to connect it in Help, and the MCP tools reference for the full list of what it can do.
It requires a higher account tier — check your profile page to see if you're eligible, or upgrade. Once eligible, you connect from the AI assistant's own settings, not from moviegroupies itself; your profile page just shows what's connected and lets you revoke access.
